Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder affecting multiple organs, including the brain. Recent evidence suggests that diabetic patients are at increased risk of cognitive decline.
Aim: To assess the prevalence and pattern of cognitive impairment among diabetic patients and analyze its association with glycemic control and duration of diabetes.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 150 diabetic patients aged 30–70 years. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA).
Results: Cognitive impairment was found in 38% of patients. Significant association was observed with poor glycemic control (HbA1c >8%), longer duration of diabetes (>10 years), hypertension, and diabetic neuropathy.
Conclusion: Routine cognitive screening should be incorporated into diabetic follow-up visits, especially for chronic uncontrolled diabetics.
